Why We Run:

Proceeds from this race will benefit the Paternostro Family Foundation and will be used to fulfill our mission to provide memorial scholarships to students at Hughesville High School who exemplify the values and work ethic of our father and sister; to provide support to those facing a cancer diagnosis, especially mothers who have young children; and to keep the memory and spirit of Kathleen and our Dad alive for their families, friends, and loved ones.

On July 1, 2011, the word cancer first entered our lives.  It was on that day that we watched our 39 year-old sister Kathleen, loving mother of her 3 year-old baby girl, begin a journey that no one saw coming. It was on this day that she first heard the words:  ”You have cancer.”

Her proudest life legacy was being Josie’s Mommy.  She fought so hard to live for Josephine.   She fought for her own future.  She fought for Josephine’s future.  She fought for the amazing love they shared.  Throughout her fight, Kass’s heart was filled with this strength and grace that to this day we have no words to describe.  We said our last goodbye on July 2, 2012 almost a year to the day following her diagnosis.

But, it was beyond our wildest imagination that cancer would come back into our lives out of nowhere just two years later.

We lost our devoted and loving father on September 8, 2014, just three days following his cancer diagnosis.  We still struggle to find the words to capture what the loss of our patriarch, our Dad, has meant to our family.  Our Dad dedicated his life to making children our highest priority.  He dedicated his life to his family and to his community. We will love him and miss him for the rest of our days.

We could never have anticipated the devastating impact these losses have had in our lives.  We have been changed forever. But, we know that the strength of our love will never die, as our spirits are forever intertwined.

From the darkness comes the light. We started our Foundation as  the Team Kass Foundation in 2013, but after losing our Dad, we now operate as the Paternostro Family Foundation.  Every day, we try to do our small part to help other families who are dealing with cancer.  We also invest in our future by providing memorial scholarships to honor their beautiful lives.

We do it all with love.  The love we have for our Dad and sister is our only compass.
